Into the Sacred City

Today, friend Paula and I visited the Blanton Museum to see an exhibit called "Into the Sacred City" that features five amazingly intricate mandalas painted on silk,  three rare thangkas (wall hangings), and several ritual paintings of Buddhist deities.  Not so many pieces,  but all absolute treasures.  I am so glad we got to see this collection (from Berkeley, btw);  we walked out feeling like we had visited another world.

To celebrate the end of this exhibit,  several Buddhist Monks are creating a sand mandala in the foyer of the museum.  My iPhone pics aren't the best, but hopefully they will give you a feel for how the artists are working on the mandala.

and the 'sky' windows above.....

On Sunday a closing ceremony is planned when the Monks will sweep (!) up the sand of the completed mandala and then sprinkle it in the rushing water of a near by creek.  It was a lovely day!
