RadiJazz

We went to RadiJazz in north Austin today. The kids had a blast in the 9,000 square foot "playnasium". It was crowded with younger school age kids due to summer vacation and 100* outside. That didn't stop Pai and Sophie! The floor is foam covered with carpet; all different levels and slopes, slides, boats, forts, playhouses, big swans to crawl on, a foam pit to jump into, balls flying in all directions and to top it all off...sixties music!

It was nap time when we got home (for everybody). RadiJazz would be a good winter time activity too. The kids burned up energy and we burned calories chasing them around. Maybe swimming tomorrow.

Lost Pines at Bastrop

Pine trees in Texas? You bet! Just east of Austin where the Hill Country is ending is The Lost Pines area. This pine is located in Bastrop State Park. There are miles of hiking trails, campgrounds and even a swimming pool. I didn't hike, but did check out maps and trail heads for a future visit.

Downtown Bastrop was a fun walk-about. Cute shops and icy latte. This antique shop was closed on a Monday.
This unique building is the City jail! The bars on the windows don't quite show up in this shot...

There is a lovely walking trail along the Colorado river, playground for kids, picnic tables and these cool swing benches. It was too hot to stop and enjoy the river.
Bastrop was a fun visit, and close to Austin. There's a Farmer's Market on Friday afternoons,
and that antique store that was closed........

Wildflower Meadow

This Arabian lives on Highway 49 near Mariposa. I expected him to raise his wings and fly away. But no, he very calmly allowed me to take his picture while munching on wildflowers.

Cool, Clear, Water

Many folks have recorded Cool Clear Water...Marty Robbins, Hank Snow, Joni Mitchell, even the Beach Boys!

I know it from a very old piano book, it was one of my favorites.

Here are the lyrics...

All day I've faced a barren waste
Without the taste of water, cool water
Old Dan and I with throats burned dry
And souls that cry for water
Cool, clear, water

Keep a-movin, Dan, dontcha listen to him, Dan
He's a devil, not a man
He spreads the burning sand with water
Dan, can ya see that big, green tree?
Where the water's runnin' free
And it's waitin' there for me and you?

The nights are cool and I'm a fool
Each star's a pool of water
Cool water
But with the dawn I'll wake and yawn
And carry on to water
Water, water, water

Keep a-movin, Dan, dontcha listen to him, Dan
He's a devil, not a man
He spreads the burning sand with water
Dan, can ya see that big, green tree?
Where the water's runnin' free
And it's waitin' there for me and you?

Cool, clear, water
Cool, clear, water

Dolly sends waves of lovely rain.....

Heavy rain came by in waves all afternoon! The gutters were flooded for brief periods and at one point the windshield wipers could not keep up with the deluge. Lucky this only lasted for a few minutes!

With perfect timing I went for a short walk/run and then swim early this morning before the rain really started. A light shower did catch me a few minutes from the car. Just nice.

Learning how the weather works in Texas is fun. Even though central Austin is in drought this year (about 50% of normal) it's so different from dry California. Often a thunder storm will blow up in the afternoon, it rains for a few minutes (and maybe just in a very localized area), then the sun comes out drying everything in short order. Very fun.

Maybe I will look for a book about Texas weather.
